Dark wallpapers are popular because they can make icons stand out and give a phone a cleaner appearance. On OLED displays, dark imagery also behaves differently from it does on traditional LCD screens.
OLED pixels produce their own light
On an OLED display, individual pixels can reduce their light output independently. A pure black pixel can be turned off, while dark gray pixels still emit some light. This is why a true black background can look especially deep on an OLED phone.
Pure black and “dark” are not the same
A wallpaper with shadows, navy tones or dark gray areas may look almost black, but those pixels are still active. If your main goal is the distinctive pure-black OLED look, choose an image with genuinely black areas rather than only lowering its brightness.
Design quality still matters more than the gimmick
Do not choose a wallpaper only because it is black. Contrast, composition and icon visibility still determine whether it feels good in daily use. A slightly brighter dark wallpaper with a clear focal point can be more practical than a completely black image with poor composition.
